How Can I Run an Successful Book Promotion?
There are multiple factors in running an effective book promotion. Below are some of the items that you can directly influence.
Get The Basics Right Before You Promote
Before you even consider promoting your book, you need to make sure that your book listing on Amazon (and other book sites where it may be listed) is well-polished. Your book page on Amazon is where potential readers make the final decision of whether or not to grab your book. You want to think like a marketer and make your book appealing to readers.
Book Cover
“Never judge a book by its cover” doesn’t really apply that well to books! Your book cover is the first impression that most readers will have of your work. If you’ve written a marvelous book and slapped a poor book cover on it, people will be less interested in reading it.
Book Title
Book titles serve as a crucial first impression, often determining whether a potential reader decides to pick up the book or pass it by. They encapsulate the essence of the narrative or subject matter, guiding readers towards books that align with their interests or curiosity.
Book Description
Don’t think of your book’s description on Amazon as a synopsis or a summary. It’s a sales pitch. make readers want to dive into your book after reading your book’s description.
Pricing
There are dozens of pricing strategies for books. If you or a new author, and your book has less than a few hundred reviews, we highly recommend promoting your book for free. your number one job as a new author is to gain readers and get reviews (while writing your next book)
If you choose not to promote your book for free, we recommend running a $0.99 Kindle Countdown Deal if your book is enrolled in KP Select. If it is not enrolled in KP Select, then we recommend discounting it to $0.99.
Readers are very price-sensitive, especially if they don’t know the author or if a book does not have many reviews.
Series Page and Links
If your book is part of a series, then make sure you’ve connected the books in your series on the Amazon site. You can do this by logging in to KDP, going to your bookshelf, and clicking on the “Manage Series” button.
Be Proactive Not Reactionary
Long-term successful authors understand they need to plan their promotions in order to maximize their impact. One of the most frustrating things we often see is someone running a five-day Kindle Countdown Deal and deciding on day four they need to actively try to get eyeballs on their book.
Be smart about planning your book promotions in advance. If you’re going to run a Kindle Countdown Deal, Kindle Free Book Promotion, schedule them with time enough to set up your promotion with Best Book Monkey. Be sure to plan all of your social media posts, prep your personal author newsletter’s release date to coincide with your promotion, and feature the promoted book on the homepage of your website.
Promote, Promote, Promote, and Then Promote Some More
We truly understand. You didn’t write a book to become a marketer. You wrote a book to be an author. However, in today’s publishing environment, you have to be both. This applies to both self-published authors and even those who have an agent and a publishing house.
Don’t just leave it to just Best Book Monkey to promote your books. The Monkey needs to be one cog in a bigger machine. Be sure to share your books on social media, in your newsletter, and on your personal website. If you see any of Best Book Monkey’s social media posts, be sure to like and share them.
If you are an author group, ask the authors to like your posts about your book, ask them to share The Monkey’s posts, and potentially cross-post your book in their newsletter.
Don’t think of your Best Book Monkey promotion as a single event. You need to be promoting your books almost constantly. this may include other book promotion services and off-line events such as book launch parties and readings at your local library.
What Are the Editorial Requirements for a Book Promotion with Best Book Monkey?

Other Frequently Asked Questions
We believe you should. Discounting your books while running promotions is simply basic buyer psychology. People love a deal, and if they believe they’re getting a deal on your book, they’re more likely to buy it or download it.
Additionally, buyers are more likely to purchase a book that is discounted, especially if they don’t know the author.
HOWEVER, Best Book Monkey DOES NOT require that you discount your books for our promotions. We will promote your book at its regular price.
The book page on our website can include any of the following links:
- Kindle
- Nook
- Kobo
- Apple Books
- Google Books
- Smashwords
- Goodreads
- Bookbub
- Your Author Website
- Your Amazon Author Page
- A Book Trailer
- Many Social Media Links
The newsletter includes links to the book sales sites, Goodreads, Bookbub, your author’s website, and book trailer.
Our social media posts are linked directly to your Amazon sales page.
There are hundreds, if not thousands, of factors influencing how effective a book promotion may be.
In addition to the above FAQ, How Can I Run a Successful Book Promotion? A few of the other factors include:
- Your overall author platform
- The number of reviews and your star ratings
- How well your promotion triggers Amazon’s algorithm
- How well your book appeals to Best Book Monkey’s readers
The most important thing you can do is not sit back and expect a single promotion to bring in thousands of readers.
The Best Book Monkey team truly wants to help writers who are trying to become long-term successful authors. One of the most important things you can do is get more readers.
The best way to get more readers is to put your book in the hands of as many people as possible. Whether you like it or not, becoming a successful author is a numbers game. Volume is critical.
Because of that, we’ve made a strategic decision to make free book promotions cheaper for authors than paid book promotions.
Additionally, we understand that running a book promotion for a free book does not equate well to a direct return on investment. We believe we are investing in the long-term success of our authors by helping them build a reader base.
And OK, we will admit it – it’s a bit of social engineering. We know authors need to get their books out there and into the hands of as many people as possible, and we hope that when they see that promoting their book for free is a more affordable alternative, that’s what they’ll do.
We are happy to promote pre-orders and new releases, along with books that have been available for some time.
Best Book Monkey does not have a set requirement for the number of reviews a book must have before we promote it.
However, we do reserve the right to reject a book if it has many low ratings and it is obvious there is a problem with the book.
We also understand that there are many trolls on the Internet who are giving authors one-star ratings and raking their books in reviews. We’ve seen this happen with high-quality authors and new authors who have been diligent about writing excellent work and working with professional editors. In these cases, we are more than happy to try to help the author find more readers and get more reviews.
The bulk of our readers come from paid advertising. We also have a presence on social media channels.
Well, most people outside of the digital marketing space may not understand “email hygiene.” It is something that we practice. We have automated tools in place that watch whether a newsletter recipient is opening the newsletter, clicking on any links, or visiting our website.
After a period of time, if they have not interacted with us, we send them a short series of emails, attempting to get them to reengage. If they do not, we remove them from our list.
This means our list is much smaller than it would be. Had we simply kept everyone who subscribed on the list, which is a bad idea.
ISPs watch newsletter companies, email delivery rates, open rates, and click rates too. When they see huge volumes of newsletters going out from a company with no one opening them or interacting with them, those companies will find their emails pushed into the spam folder and, in some cases, not delivered. We are actively working to keep our reader list engaged and deliver our newsletter into the readers’ inboxes.
