When nurse Beatrix Chalmers accepts a position at Hearthorne Manor, the warning in her letter of engagement has already been crossed out.

She arrives to find a household of women marked by something she cannot name — a pattern etched into the stones of the manor, into the rhythms of the tides, into the bodies of those who serve within its walls. The transformation is slow. It is documented, in her own clinical hand, with terrible precision.

Told entirely through letters, journals, and testimonies, Hearthorne assembles the fragmentary record of what occurred at a cursed Lancashire manor in the autumn of 1870 — and asks, with no easy answer, whether what happened to the women of Hearthorne was violation, or something far stranger.

Beatrix is not passive. She is furious. She documents, resists, and burns — and goes into the deep carrying every ounce of that fury with her.

Some things cannot be stopped. They can only be survived differently.
