Edgar Allan Poe, lauded as one of the best literary talents of the nineteenth century, met his untimely demise on Sunday, October 7, 1849. Poe’s whereabouts, from the exact moment he arrives in Baltimore on Friday September 29th, until that fateful Wednesday October 3rd, remain a mystery. A colleague discovered the author, in a critical condition collapsed on a Baltimore street. Edgar dies four days later without shedding light on what happened.
Poe set out for work in Philadelphia, but how did he end up in Baltimore? Even his cousin Neilson Poe told people he did not know Edgar was in the city until they found him on the street. His mysterious death holds the very same unanswered questions today as they did back when he passed. Of the many possible causes, each lacked the hard evidence to substantiate a definitive answer to his unfortunate fate.
Poe’s death remains one of the greatest unsolved mysteries in American history. My story is historical fiction. I take the many possible causes and weave a fictionalized account of the writer’s last months alive and why he came to Baltimore on Friday September 29th. The known facts, such as places and dates, are accurate, but the unknowns are fuel for my fictional account. This solves nothing, but I hope it entertains you.
